PRESCRIBED CORE CURRICULUM REQUIREMENT

The Washington State Real Estate Commission and Department of Licensing have adopted new rules that will require the completion of 3 clock hours of prescribed core curriculum. Prescribed core curriculum is defined as a specific course of study, recommended by the real estate commission for approval by the director that provides practical information on contemporary issues relating to the practice of real estate. The 3 mandatory core clock hours must be included in the 30 clock hours required for active licensees beginning with renewal dates on or after June 1, 2004. Licensees must complete a course designated as including the prescribed core curriculum within twenty-four months of his or her renewal date.

Courses with the prescribed curriculum shall be offered as core credit for 2-year periods. The first core offering will run from June 1, 2002 through December 31, 2003. The topic of the first core curriculum will be Current Trends and Issues and cover four issues: environmental, fair housing, basic agency, and law updates. Curriculum has been developed for both residential and commercial real estate disciplines.

This first core curriculum will be available for 19 months only. The second core curriculum will be available from January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2005. Thereafter, all core courses shall be available for 24-month periods. You will find the core course designation in the Real Estate Course Catalog, which is available at the website address indicated below. Only those course numbers indicating a core designation will receive core CE credit, (i.e., C---CORE0203). The schools may offer these courses as separate 3-hour courses, or the 3-clock hour curriculum may be contained within a 30 or less clock-hour course. It will be important that you make certain that the course you select has the proper core designation number.

You may contact the school provider regarding questions about the core offering. Additional information and the text of the new rule describing core curriculum is available on the Department of Licensing. You may also contact the Departments real estate licensing section at (360) 664-6488 or (360) 664-6500.

Thank you in advance for helping the Washington State Real Estate Commission and the department in making this a successful program benefiting real estate licensees and consumers.
